Ten (10) things to follow in the new testament

There is a set of 'follows' instructed to us in the new testament, which is the new covenant we are all in.

If we are keen to do and follow exactly what the word of God says, we will surely not have a reason to be separated from our God.

1. Follow Christ

Matt 4:19 'Follow Christ and He will in turn make you a fisher of men.'

The first step is to follow Christ, the second is to follow in His footsteps. We got born again to not only inherit eternal life, but to also go out there and spread the Gospel and win souls for our God.

Following Christ calls for self denial. In Matt 16:24, the word tells us that whoever WANTS to follow Christ MUST deny themselves, carry their crosses and follow Jesus.

Christ called upon the rich man in Mark 10:21 to sell everything he had inorder to follow Him. Matt 8:22, Luke 9:23, John 21:17-19

2. Follow Holiness

Heb 12:14(b) Without holiness, nobody will see God, whose very nature is holiness.

Christ did no sin. We don't have a choice; if we want to see this Sovereign God ,we MUST be holy.

3. Follow Peace

Heb 12:14(a) 'Be at peace with everybody. Follow peace with your neighbours, family and all men.'

Blessed are the peace makers for they shall be called the sons of God, Matt 5:9.

Isaiah 48:22 says that there is no peace for the wicked, if you want to live peacefully be holy. Peace and holiness are an item.

4. Follow meekness

1 Tim 6:11, Matt 5:5 says 'blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth.' While humility is seeing oneself as lowly and the absence of superiority, meekness is being quiet and gentle especially in situations that could easily push you into reacting.

The scriptures describe Jesus as very meek. Most of the time He never defended Himself out of situations. Please note that being meek does not mean that one is weak.

5. Follow patience

1 Tim 6:11 It is the ones who will be patient to the end who will be saved. Just be perseverant in tribulations. Rom 12:12 says we should be patient in our afflictions.

6. Follow faith

There are many kinds of faiths in the world, including false prophecies.

Follow the right faith. The Bible says that the righteous shall live by faith, nowhere does it say they shall live by prophecy. This does not mean that we should despise prophecy, the Bible tells us to weigh it instead. Read the word of God and have your faith activated.

7. Follow Godliness

1 Tim 6:11

If you are not Godly, you are worldly. Live a Godly life and dont lust after the ways of this world.

1 John 2:15 cautions us against two things not to love: the world and the ways of the world.

Though we are in the world, we are not of the world. As believers we ought to take the Church to the world but not the world to Church.

8. Follow righteousness.

1 Tim 6:11, 2 Tim 2:22 Strive to be right with God. Flee everything that separates you from being right with Him.

Run with those that call onto God out of pure hearts. Matt 5:6 says that blessed are those that hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be filled.

9. Follow good

1 Thes 5: 15 Dont pay evil with evil remember you are Christ like. If you are required to engage in something that does not glorify God, just say no and follow that which takes you closer to God.

If it does not please God, it is wrong. 3 John 1:11 says that we should NOT immitate evil, but that which is good. Those who do not follow good do not KNOW GOD. Paying tithes and giving offerings are also included in the goods we ought to follow.

10. Follow Love

1 Cor 14:1, 1 Tim 6:11, 2 Tim 2:22. God is love. This means if we have God in us we demonstrate that which God is; love.

Love everybody even those that you think do not deserve it. Imagine what a great love Christ demonstrated by giving up His life for ours. Intrestingly, our very first follow in this write up is Christ hence, follow Christ who is love.

"But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness." 1 Timothy 6:11
