The inner man
The inner man, or the spirit man, is what the real human being is all about.
The outer visible man, is just a short-term body that houses the spirit man.
Eventually, the body wastes away and dies. The spirit man lives on.
This is why on the cross, Jesus told the disciple that was saved, that he would be with Him in paradise later on that day.
Jesus was not referring to the thief's body, since it was going to hang on that cross lifeless after all. He was referring to the inner man, the real man.
In Eph 3:14-17, Paul was crying to God, for the church of Ephesus, that their inner beings would be strengthened with power, through the Spirit of God.
This is because Paul understood that the inner man is all there is when it comes to the things of the spirit. When he is rich, a man will carry out exploits. Paul also prayed for the Church to grow in faith, in grace and to dwell in Christ Jesus.
Most people work to strengthen the outer man sadly, while the inner man dwarfens. The inner man must be active in the things of God to stay alive.
It is an everyday battle for believers against the old nature, the sinful nature.
Until your flesh learns to die daily, the old nature will overpower you. When the outer man is alive and powerful, we are exposed to sin, and cannot escape doing evil.
The flesh, lust of the eyes, pride of this life, satanic schemes, you name it, there is something to fight against everyday. Our battles are not physical but spiritual (Eph 6: 12)
We need to ensure that the spirit man is well fed to stay alive and healthy.
This is what the inner man feeds on:
1. The Word of God
'Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that precedes from the mouth of God.' (Deut 8:3, Matt 4:4)
It is therefore possible to fast for even long periods of time, because your inner man will be feeding on God's Word during that period. Food is for the outer man. The Word is for the inner man.
In Joshua 1:8, God gave to Joshua practical instructions, on how he would be successful in leading the Israelites, to inheriting the promised land. God told Joshua to never let His Word depart from his mouth.
Joshua obeyed. As a result, he was very successful. He even made the sun stand still, so that the nation of Israel would avenge themselves against their enemies. (Joshua 10:12-13)
Matt 22:29 says 'you err because you do not know the scriptures.'
If believers read the and fed on the Word of God, they would easily escape the snares of false prophets.
2. Brethren Fellowship
It is in brethren fellowship that God releases power.
When the Power of God is released to a people in fellowship, the move of the power of God is eminent. This goes to strengthen the inner man. Heb 10:25 says we should not give up meeting together.
Each firm and righteous believer carries fire.
When believers come together, their individual 'fires' merge into a furnace. Not even the powers of hell can withstand the fire of God on a people totally sold out to Christ.
Prayer is life. Prayer is everything. When the righteous pray, great things happen. Each believer oughts to have an intimacy with the Holy Spirit. This way, when believers come together to fellowship, the fire will be felt.
Interaction with God through prayer builds up the inner man to be alert and connected in the spirit.
It is to prayerful believers, who seek after God whole heartedly, that God reveals Himself.
The prayer of a righteous man availeth much. James 5:16
Galatians 2:20 "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."
